Samoyed grooming for that white, fluffy coat

There's a reason our logo is a Samoyed. That thick, white, stand-off coat is our happy place. We keep Sammies clean, bright and properly de-shed, with a deep hydrobath, a high-velocity blow-out and a thorough brush-out.

Understanding the Samoyed coat

The Samoyed's famous coat is a double coat: a thick, soft, woolly undercoat under longer, straighter guard hairs that stand away from the body and give that cloud-like look. Samoyeds shed year-round and blow their coat, often once or twice a year, when the undercoat comes out in huge amounts.

Because the coat is so dense, it can mat, especially behind the ears, under the legs, and around the "pants" on the back legs. And because it's white, a good bath and a thorough dry make a big difference to how bright it looks.

Our Samoyed de-shed, step by step

No shaving, no shortcuts. Just the loose, dead undercoat taken out properly.

1. Deep hydrobath

Shampoo and conditioner worked right through the thick coat to the skin, loosening the dead undercoat. We use premium Plush Puppy products.

2. High-velocity blow-out

Powerful drying that blows the loose undercoat out of the coat, and dries it properly, all the way to the skin.

3. Undercoat brush-out

Careful brushing to finish removing loose undercoat and tangles, keeping the guard hairs that protect the skin.

Prices are starting prices. The final price is confirmed after assessment based on size, coat & grooming needs.

At home between grooms

  • Line-brush in small sections with an undercoat rake, then check with a metal comb.
  • Pay extra attention to behind the ears, the armpits and the "pants".
  • Never brush out mats when the coat is wet. Water tightens them.
  • Dry the coat completely after swims or rain, right down to the skin.
Thinking of shaving? Please don't, at least not without a matting or medical reason. Here's why double coats shouldn't be shaved.

Samoyed grooming: your questions

Can you shave a Samoyed?

We don't recommend it unless there's a matting or medical reason. A Samoyed's double coat protects the skin, and shaving can change how the coat grows back. A thorough de-shed is the better option.

How do you keep a Samoyed's coat white?

Regular bathing with good-quality products, drying the coat completely, and brushing out loose undercoat all help a Samoyed coat stay bright. We use premium Plush Puppy products chosen to suit the coat.

Why does my Samoyed get matted behind the ears?

The fur behind the ears is extra soft and fine, so it tangles faster than the rest of the coat. A quick comb there every day or two makes a big difference.

How often should a Samoyed be groomed?

Brush several times a week, daily during a coat blow, and book a professional de-shed every six to twelve weeks, plus an extra visit when the coat starts to blow.
