Understanding the Malamute coat

The Alaskan Malamute has a heavy, coarse double coat: a thick, woolly undercoat beneath dense guard hairs. When a Malamute blows its coat, often once or twice a year, the amount of undercoat can be astonishing.

Malamutes are big dogs with a lot of coat, so bathing them thoroughly and drying them completely at home is a real challenge. That's where a professional hydrobath and high-velocity blow-out make the biggest difference.

Our Malamute de-shed, step by step

No shaving, no shortcuts. Just the loose, dead undercoat taken out properly.

1. Deep hydrobath

Shampoo and conditioner worked right through the thick coat to the skin, loosening the dead undercoat. We use premium Plush Puppy products.

2. High-velocity blow-out

Powerful drying that blows the loose undercoat out of the coat, and dries it properly, all the way to the skin.

3. Undercoat brush-out

Careful brushing to finish removing loose undercoat and tangles, keeping the guard hairs that protect the skin.

Prices are starting prices. The final price is confirmed after assessment based on size, coat & grooming needs.

At home between grooms

  • Use a sturdy undercoat rake, working in small sections from the back legs forward.
  • Brush outside if you can. Malamute coat blows are no joke.
  • Watch the thick fur around the neck, the "pants" and the tail.
  • Make sure the coat dries fully after a wash or a swim.
Thinking of shaving? Please don't, at least not without a matting or medical reason. Here's why double coats shouldn't be shaved.

Malamute grooming: your questions

Do you groom large dogs like Malamutes?

Yes. Large and extra-large breeds are welcome. Our salon is set up for big breeds, from Huskies and Malamutes to Groodles and other big, fluffy dogs.

Should I shave my Malamute?

We don't recommend shaving a double-coated breed unless there's a matting or medical reason. A professional de-shed removes the loose undercoat while keeping the guard hairs that protect the skin.

How often does a Malamute need de-shedding?

Many owners book every six to twelve weeks, plus an extra visit when the coat starts to blow. Regular brushing at home in between helps a lot.

What affects the price of a Malamute groom?

Size, coat density, coat condition, time since the last groom, and temperament. Our prices are starting prices, and the final price is confirmed after we assess your dog.
